Junior Testing Specialist Tuukka Mäensivu makes digital services better for everyone
For Tuukka Mäensivu, a career in IT has felt like a natural choice for a long time. Technology has been part of his life through his family, the people around him and his own hobby projects, and his interest in programming began at an early age. Tuukka says he started learning Java at the age of 12 by working on Minecraft mods, before moving on to game servers and small projects of his own.

Today, Tuukka works at HiQ as a Junior Testing Specialist. He is studying Business Information Technology at Lahti University of Applied Sciences and has previously served on the board of the student union.
Tuukka’s story at HiQ is also a story of new beginnings. He moved to Espoo a couple of months ago and says he has enjoyed the change. A new city, a new job and new people have brought plenty of positives to his everyday life. – There’s plenty to do, and being in a bigger city feels inspiring, Tuukka says.
Testing through the user’s eyes
Although Tuukka’s studies were not initially focused exclusively on testing, he discovered his interest in the field through hands-on experience. His first exposure to testing came during an internship with the Finnish Defence Forces, where he worked on manual testing and quality assurance. The experience reinforced his feeling that testing was precisely the kind of work he wanted to develop his skills in.
User interfaces, usability and user experience are particularly important to Tuukka. He is interested in how a service feels from the user’s perspective: is it straightforward to use, does it work as expected, and does the overall experience feel well made?
A student project for the municipality of Heinola gave Tuukka a new perspective on evaluating online services. Through the project, he began paying closer attention to usability and accessibility. He started thinking about the situations in which services are used and how different users are taken into account in their design and development.
Mobile testing reveals what might otherwise go unnoticed
According to Tuukka, mobile testing essentially means using a service on an actual phone and assessing whether everything works as it should. This matters because, for many people, a phone is now the primary way to access digital services.
Taking a mobile perspective helps uncover problems that may not be apparent in the desktop view. Tuukka points out that websites do not always automatically adapt to a phone screen correctly. Someone needs to test that the content, views and functionality are displayed and work as intended.
This reflects Tuukka’s approach to his work: looking at things from the end user’s perspective. A high-quality digital service is not just technically functional. It is also easy to understand, accessible and smooth to use across different devices.
An open-minded learner who embraces new tasks
Tuukka describes himself as an open-minded person and learner. As a new employee, he has been keen to receive feedback and understand how he can develop in his role. He says he has welcomed the tasks assigned to him and approached them with an open mind.
Naturally, there is a lot to learn in a new job. Tuukka takes a constructive approach to this. For him, the challenges are mainly about learning new things and working through growing pains. Although progress can sometimes be slow at first, he sees this as part of working and developing his skills.
This attitude fits well with HiQ’s expert culture, which values curiosity, taking responsibility and continuous development. Tuukka’s approach to work reflects a desire to understand the bigger picture, ask the right questions and improve services from the user’s perspective.
Professionalism is built on good practices
One thing that particularly stayed with Tuukka from his internship was the standard of work. He appreciated the attention to detail, clear documentation and defined requirements. The experience demonstrated how much professional working practices can influence the final outcome.
The same thinking applies to testing. Good quality assurance is based on systematic work to ensure that a service functions correctly, meets its requirements and serves its users as well as possible.
Growing into an expert together at HiQ
Tuukka’s interview paints a picture of a workplace where a new specialist has room to learn, ask questions and grow. He has been able to get involved in the work, take on responsibility at a suitable pace and shape his own direction in testing. According to the interview summary, HiQ has provided strong support, and Tuukka’s goals are to deepen his expertise in test automation, gain certifications and eventually move towards test management.
Tuukka finds projects with a positive impact on society particularly motivating, as the effects of the work reach beyond the immediate project.
Tuukka’s career path shows how people at HiQ can grow into experts by following their interests and gaining hands-on experience. There is no need to know everything from the start. What matters is a willingness to learn, do your work well and understand the needs of the people behind the technology. That is how expertise grows and better digital services are created.
